March Design, Part Four

Goal #1 from my 13 in 2013 list:
Design something new every week in January (for Spring), March (for Summer), June (for Fall), and September (for Winter).
Note: March designs will be for Summer and Fall, as I am working on my Fall Line this month.

Design #4 (week of Mar 17-23)

Embroidered V-neck Wedding Dress

In case you didn't hear, it's wedding season!!! I'm working on a collection of brides' & bridesmaids' dresses for a photo shoot next week*. This beauty is part of that collection!

This dress has modest coverage with a V-neck bodice. The shape (a little boxy with a center front seam) is vintage-inspired and oh so chic!

I wanted this skirt to be full, but not poofy. So, it is made with deep waist pleats and no petticoat. And, with a stiffer satin or silk fabric, it will hold its shape nicely without being too flowy. This is for the elegant bride!

Adding to the elegance is embroidery and sequins on the bodice. Can't you just see the stunning effect of silver on white or gold on ivory? Or maybe silver and gold together! I'm lovin' it!

Also, big plus: pockets! I love pockets!

*Listings will be available near the end of April, but can be custom-ordered before then.

March Design, Part Three

Goal #1 from my 13 in 2013 list:
Design something new every week in January (for Spring), March (for Summer), June (for Fall), and September (for Winter).
Note: March designs will be for Summer and Fall, as I am working on my Fall Line this month.

Design #3 (week of Mar 10-16)

Bermuda-length Shorts with Ruffled Pockets

It's another nice pair of Bermudas! These long shorts provide coverage AND cuteness!

I'm a big fan of ruffles! This cute, contrast pocket ruffle adds interest and uniqueness.

These shorts will be tailored for normal-to-curvy women, with a fitted waistband and front zipper.

the shorts from Summer 2012
You may remember that I made shorts like this last year, when I was designing for my Fashion Star audition.

Several people suggested that the ruffles be made of contrasting fabric, and I agree that it would be better!

I am also adding a wider cuff to the hem of the shorts. On some pairs, I plan to put the contrast color on the cuff or waistband, as well.

My plans are to make this design in khaki with lower bands & pocket ruffles of gold-flecked ivory chiffon (can you tell that I already bought the fabric?). And possibly denim with a contrasting color, like red.

March Design, Part One

Goal #1 from my 13 in 2013 list:
Design something new every week in January (for Spring), March (for Summer), June (for Fall), and September (for Winter).
Note: March designs will be for Summer and Fall, as I am working on my Fall Line this month.

Design #1 (week of Feb 24 - Mar 2)

Bermuda-length Shorts with Contrast Bands

I love a good pair of Bermuda shorts in the summer!
When it's warm, but I haven't been biking in a while, long shorts provide coverage AND cuteness!

But, seriously, does any normal woman look good in short shorts? No. Unless, of course, she has super skinny legs or is under 12 years of age. For the rest of us, there are Bermudas :D

These long shorts have an extra cute factor: contrasting bands! Can you imagine brown shorts with ivory/pink calico cuffs and waistband? I want to wear them now!

These shorts will be comfortable and adjustable, with 2" wide elastic in the waistband. The elastic is wide enough that they won't look like those unflattering elastic-waist jeans. No need for a zipper--just a drawstring.

My plans are to make this design in lightweight (but not see-through) fabrics and contrasting bands. Or, with eyelet cuffs of the same color (like white eyelet on white twill).

New Semi-Formal Dresses & Bridal Expo Recap

Wow, is it the end of February already?
I hardly remember January . . . probably because I was working like crazy. Designing, sewing, and photographing new dresses, mostly!

You see, I was an exhibitor at the Warsaw Premier Bridal Expo on February 3rd. The Warsaw area, where I live, is fairly small, so there are not too many ways to advertise to brides-to-be. The Expo is the perfect place to meet most of my local target market!

My goal was to have a large supply of dresses & bridal accessories on display at the Expo. And I did!

Not only did I have lots of dresses displayed, I also had models!!! My mother, sister, and 2 friends came to help me out :) It was so nice to have others to help my exhausted self talk to excited brides.

Speaking of exhausted, back to those dresses ;)

The plan was to make sample dresses with fabric from my stash, left over from previous projects. I made several and barely made a dent in the fabric, so be on the lookout for more!

I designed about 8 dresses, and sewed 5 of them. Then I had a full Saturday of photographing the new dresses, as well as some older ones which needed new photos.

New Dresses:

Sweetheart Dress with Lace V-Neck Overlay

This dress design started off as a super-complicated mash of purple and white. As I sewed, it evolved into a much more simple & elegant little number, with a purple, strapless, sweetheart bodice overlaid with white lace in a V-neck design.

I think this dress is so sweet :)
I want to make this one again, maybe with a pencil skirt or circle skirt.

Vintage-Inspired, Side-Pleated Dress
I LOVE one-shoulder dresses! So slimming and sexy, yet modest.
Adding even more slimming goodness: side pleats and a pencil skirt. Add to that the gathered strap, and it's a vintage-inspired beauty that I drool over.

I can hardly wait to make this design in a less-dressy fabric, so I can wear it to a wedding :)

Short Gathered-Bodice Dress

I love the tea- and floor-length versions of this dress, so I had to make a knee-length one!

The gathered front of the bodice is so cute! And isn't that skirt prefect for twirling? This would be great as a bridesmaid dress, or a sundress in cotton.

Short Double-Gathered-Bodice Wedding Dress

I also have a floor-length version of this one--quite possibly my favorite of the formal dresses I've worn. The top gathering is adorable, and the waist gathering is sooo slimming!

Instead of contrasting colors, I made this one in bridal satin and lace. Perfect as a short wedding gown or reception dress!

January Design, Part Two

Goal #1 from my 13 in 2013 list:
Design something new every week in January (for Spring), March (for Summer), June (for Fall), and September (for Winter).

Design #2 (week of Jan 6-12)
(Confession: I actually designed and sketched this a few weeks ago.)

Frilly Blouse/Sweater with waist tie

I love wearing shirts which emphasize the natural waistline for 3 reasons:

1. Convenience: with something tied or fitted to my waist and loose at my hips, it doesn't move much when I sit down or stand up. As a woman with a long torso, I usually have to adjust my shirt when I stand up, but not with a shirt like this!

2. Comfort: When I don't need to adjust the length of the shirt, it fits properly all over. If it's long enough to reach my hips, I don't have to make it stretch around my shoulders and bust. Yay!

3. Attractiveness: Every women's figure looks good with an emphasized waistline! While I dress (and create clothing) modestly, I do like to look good and flatter my figure. Who doesn't?

This top is moderately fitted at the natural waistline, and has a waist tie for further emphasis (and cuteness!).

The frills/lace/ruffles down the middle add a feminine touch, while the higher neckline establishes professionalism.

As a cotton blouse, the sleeves are 3/4-length, perhaps with small cuffs, and the ruffles are of cotton or lace.
As a knit sweater, the sleeves are wrist length, possibly with a rolled cuff, and ruffles are of the same material.

My 13 Goals for 2013

I love goals. I need goals. Without them, I start a project, then leave halfway through to begin another. When I have a goal or deadline, I work toward it, enjoying the pleasant feeling of accomplishment.

So, I have set 13 goals to accomplish in 2013! Some are personal, some are business-related. (Thanks, Regina, for the idea!)

Build myself as a Designer:

1. Design something new every week in January (for Spring), March (for Summer), June (for Fall), and September (for Winter). I want to produce those designs the following month, as a seasonal clothing collection.

2. Launch Collections:
     - Spring Collection in February or March (2-3 pieces).
     - Summer Collection in April or May.
     - Fall Collection in July or August.
     - Winter Collection in October or November.
     - Bridal & Prom Collection in September or October.

Expand my Etsy Shop:

3. Have a full page of listings (24) in the Bridal Accessories section (15 more). Preferably by February.

4. Have 20 listings in the Dresses section (7 more) Preferably by May.

5. Have a full page of listings (24) in the Dresses section (4 additional). Preferably by October.

6. Have 8 listings in the Wedding Gowns section (4 more). Preferably by February.

7. Have 50 coffee sleeves in inventory. Preferably by November.

8. Don't buy any cotton fabrics. Use fabric stash to create new items (non-clothing).

Live Well:

9. Read through the Bible in a year. I've done this before, and it's wonderful! My church is doing it together, so I'm doubly excited!

10. Low-Carb Diet. Intensive for 1-2 months, moderate for the rest of the year.
My husband is pre-diabetic, so we need to regulate his blood sugar naturally.
I want to get good at cooking and baking low-carb. Hopefully we'll both loose weight, too!

11. Try 2 new recipes every month. I enjoy this, but I don't do it often enough.

12. Read at least one book each month. This is how I de-stress. Very important!

13. Enjoy each month and document with photos. I love nature, changing seasons, holidays! I want to make a point of enjoying them, not just living through them.

What are your goals or ambitions for 2013? Please share!

Knox Harvest Festival, August 2012

Between auditioning for Fashion Star, making wedding dresses, and other sewing projects, I also prepared for a Craft Show this summer!

At the end of August, I packed up my '95 Ford Explorer with doors, bins, and baskets, and drove half an hour to Plymouth, IN to meet up with my friend Kelly!

Kelly's booth & my booth
Kelly and I met a year ago through the Christian Artists' Street Team (CAST) on Etsy. How excited were we to learn that we live so close to each other?!

My skirts :)
When Kelly talked about being a vendor at the Knox Harvest Festival, and I asked how to do it too, she suggested that we share a double booth. And, boy, and I glad we did!

Doors are great for hanging!
The show itself was kinda disappointing: not many people, very high temperatures, annoying smokers (we were told they would be no smoking--wrong!). {We made back our booth fees and enough to cover our display supplies, at least.}

BUT, spending the weekend with Kelly was so much fun!!!

Kelly & me, when we met up last year

We decided that this festival was practice for us: setting up displays, making inventory, etc. Because we're doing several more shows together this fall!!!

Upcoming Shows:

Shipshewana Fall Crafter's Fair - Shipshewana, IN - Oct 4-6

Trinity Ladies' Night - South Bend, IN - October 18 (ok, this one is just me--at my home church)

I <3 Handmade - Chambersburg, PA - November 10

Hoosier Artisan Boutique - Noblesville, IN - November 24

If you happen to be near us/me during those dates, please stop by and say hello!

Fashion Star Audition Story

Remember when I posted about how much I love the TV show Fashion Star and the inspiration that came from it? (You can read the original post here, and the following ones here, here, and here)

Shirt & Shorts

Well, I decided to audition for Fashion Star :)

I spent the last month or so designing.

Actually designing.

For the first time in a long time, I sketched new ideas, re-vamped designs I made years ago, and draped beautiful fabric on my dressform.

Blue & Black Dress Etsy listing

In the midst of working on projects for Etsy, community members, and myself, I made 2 new dresses, a shirt, and a pair of shorts--all my designs and made specifically to take to my Fashion Star audition (and list on Etsy, of course) :D

I brought 9 items: 2 wedding dresses, a formal dress, 3 semi-formal dresses, a skirt, shorts, and a shirt. Pictures are scattered around this post.

The show held Open Calls all over the country. The closest one to me was in Chicago, on July 22nd.

Parker, me, Rachel
My husband, sister, and I traveled to our dad's house for the weekend--he lives much closer to Chicago and we wanted to spend time with him.

Then, on Sunday, we took the South Shore train line into Chicago, alighting at Millennium Park :)

The open call audition was held at the old Marshall Field building, now Macy's on State Street--two or three easy blocks from the station.

I found these amazing black travel dress bags that folded & zipped up to look like art portfolios. It definitely was an easy way to carry 9 items of clothing all over the city!

The open audition was scheduled from noon to 5pm, and I arrived at 11:30. I got right in line, and I was already person #137! Little did I know that most of the people were there early. I think there were about 200 people total that day.

I waited in line for about an hour & a half, then checked in and got my number.

Then I waited in the anteroom.

For another two hours.

(At first, I read a business magazine to pass the time. After an hour in this room I realized that my family could be with me, so I brought them in. That was better.)

I put this on the table. Etsy listing
Then my number was called, and I went into the judging room.

Each contestant in the judging room had a black-covered table and a clothing rack, on which to create a display. That was fun!!!!

Once I set up my display (I wish I had taken a picture!), a judge spent a few minutes with me, asking about what I do, my signature piece, my competition, the store in which I could see my clothing, etc.

I brought this too! Etsy listing
I wish I had known that he would ask those specific questions, so I could prepare. I never thought about who I would consider my competition, but thinking about it on my feet really helped me solidify who I am as a designer.

And who am I as a designer? I'm glad you asked!

I think I am more like Ann Taylor than Christian Dior or John Varvatos

Etsy listing
I don't consider myself a high-end fashion designer, nor do I want to be one. My clothing tends to be good-quality formal, business, or casual, but not crazy high-end. That's my goal now, anyway.

So, after 3 minutes with a judge and a few minutes turning in my paperwork, I packed up and left. So much waiting for so little judging time. Sigh.

My sweet family gave me mint chocolates when I was done, which made things much better :)

Etsy listing
We were all starving, and we saw a Qdoba across the street. = LUNCH! Yum.

Anymore, you can't visit Chicago and not take pictures by the Bean. It's a huge mirrored sculpture shaped like a  . . . bean.

We happened to be a few blocks away, so we found it and took fun pictures!
Parker & I at the Bean

Even though it was 90-something degrees and we were carrying my dress bags, I still wanted to visit Navy Pier--my favorite place in Chicago.

Yep, I brought my wedding dress. Etsy listing
So we walked there!

Maybe not the best decision . . . it was a longer walk than we thought, so we only spent about ten minutes in the mall before we walked back to the train station.

But we bought Mackinac Island fudge!!!!!!!!!!!

The best fudge shop on Mackinac Island (which I visited in May) also has a shop in the Navy Pier mall. So tasty!!!

Then we took the train back to Valparaiso, and drove back to my dad's house.

I was told that if I had a call back for Fashion Star, I would receive a call my midnight--that night.

We all waited on pins and needles for hours.

Sadly, I was not called back.

But I'm ok :)

Auditioning for Fashion Star was an AMAZING experience!!! Through the process, I defined myself as a designer and reaffirmed why I'm trying so hard to build a business that (for now) doesn't make much money. I remembered how much I love designing :)

So, where am I going from here? I'm not quite sure yet.

At the end of the month, my husband's year trial period for my business will expire, and he will be evaluating if I make enough money to keep going with it.

I sincerely hope he lets me continue! If not, I will find a part-time or full-time job in the fall and will have little time for sewing or designing.

For now, I'm working on projects: a wedding dress, purses for a craft festival, custom orders from Etsy.

And I'm praying for direction :)
